December 09, 2024
Whitehorse, Yukon – The Government of Canada is committed to addressing the root causes of gender-based violence and providing support for survivors. Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services, announced funding of more than $2 million for seven Yukon organizations that are working to prevent and address gender-based violence.
“Gender-based violence is a serious issue that has a devastating impact on individuals, families, and communities,” said Minister Hajdu. “Our government is committed to supporting organizations that are working to prevent and address this violence in Yukon. These organizations are providing essential services to survivors and working to create a safer and more equitable society for all.”
The funding will support a variety of projects, including:
- Providing culturally relevant support services for Indigenous women and girls who have experienced violence
- Developing and delivering prevention programs for youth
- Training for professionals who work with survivors of violence
- Public awareness campaigns to change attitudes and behaviors that contribute to gender-based violence
“This funding is a testament to the Government of Canada’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence,” said the Honourable Brendan Hanley, Minister of Justice for Yukon. “These organizations are doing important work to support survivors and create a safer community for everyone.”
The Government of Canada is committed to working with all levels of government, Indigenous organizations, and community groups to address gender-based violence. Through the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, the government is investing $100 million over five years to support a coordinated response to this issue.
