North West of England has its say on the future of the NHS
Published 7 December 2024
People across the North West of England have been sharing their views on the future of the NHS as part of the biggest ever public consultation on health and care.
The independent review, led by former health secretary Patricia Hewitt, is looking at how the NHS can be made more sustainable and provide the best possible care for patients in the future.
More than 1,000 people from across the region have taken part in a series of public meetings, workshops and online surveys.
They have shared their experiences of using the NHS, their concerns about the future and their ideas for how it could be improved.
Some of the key themes that have emerged from the consultation include:
- The need for more joined-up care, with better communication between different parts of the NHS and social care.
- The importance of investing in prevention and early intervention, to keep people healthy and out of hospital.
- The need for more staff, particularly nurses and doctors, and for them to be better supported.
- The importance of making sure that the NHS is responsive to the needs of local communities.
Patricia Hewitt said: “I am very grateful to everyone who has taken the time to share their views with us.
“The feedback we have received has been invaluable and will help us to make recommendations for how the NHS can be made more sustainable and provide the best possible care for patients in the future.”
The independent review is due to publish its final report in early 2025.
