Ukraine: UNICEF chief urges greater protection for children ‘caught in this nightmare’

GENEVA/NEW YORK, 4 December 2024 – As the war in Ukraine nears the two-year mark, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell has called for greater protection for children, who continue to bear the brunt of the conflict.
“Children in Ukraine are caught in a nightmare,” said Russell. “They have witnessed unspeakable horrors, and many have lost their loved ones, their homes, and their sense of security.”
According to UNICEF, more than 7 million children have been impacted by the conflict, with over 1.5 million displaced within Ukraine and nearly 800,000 having fled to neighboring countries. An estimated 400 children have been killed and more than 600 injured since the start of the war.
“Children in Ukraine need our urgent protection,” said Russell. “We must do everything in our power to keep them safe, provide them with essential services, and help them rebuild their lives.”
UNICEF is working with partners to provide a range of services to children and families in Ukraine, including:
- Emergency cash assistance to families in need
- Psychosocial support for children and caregivers
- Education and child protection services
- Health and nutrition interventions
- Water, sanitation, and hygiene services
UNICEF is also calling on all parties to the conflict to respect international law and to take all measures to protect children from harm.
“The war in Ukraine is a tragedy for all involved, but it is especially devastating for children,” said Russell. “We must not forget their plight, and we must do everything in our power to help them.”
