NASA Leadership to Provide Update on Artemis Campaign
December 4, 2024
Washington, D.C. – NASA leadership will hold a media teleconference on Monday, December 11, at 10 a.m. EST to provide an update on the agency’s Artemis campaign.
The teleconference will be led by NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, Artemis Mission Manager Mike Sarafin, and other senior NASA officials. They will discuss the latest progress on the Artemis program, including the upcoming Artemis I mission, which is scheduled to launch in May 2024.
The Artemis program is NASA’s plan to return humans to the Moon by 2024 and establish a sustainable human presence on the lunar surface by 2028. The program is named after the Greek goddess Artemis, who was the twin sister of Apollo, the god of the Sun.
The Artemis I mission will be the first uncrewed flight of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft. The SLS is the most powerful rocket ever built, and the Orion spacecraft is designed to carry astronauts to the Moon and back.
The Artemis I mission will launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida and will travel to the Moon and back in a 26-day mission. The mission will test the SLS rocket, the Orion spacecraft, and the ground systems that will be used for future Artemis missions.
The Artemis program is a major undertaking for NASA, and it is the first step in the agency’s plans to return humans to the Moon and eventually to Mars. The Artemis program is a complex and ambitious endeavor, but it is also a necessary one if we want to continue to explore the cosmos and push the boundaries of human knowledge.
