Uncertain World Needs Award-Winning IT, Cyber Professionals, DOD Official Says
(FORT MEADE, Md.) — As the world faces an uncertain future, the Department of Defense (DOD) will need to rely on the expertise of award-winning information technology (IT) and cybersecurity professionals to maintain its technological edge and protect its networks from cyberattacks.
That’s according to John Sherman, the acting director of the DOD’s Office of the Chief Information Officer, who spoke at a recent awards ceremony for the department’s top IT and cyber professionals.
“The world is an uncertain place right now,” Sherman said. “We’re seeing a lot of challenges, from the COVID-19 pandemic to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These challenges are only going to become more complex in the years to come.”
“In order to meet these challenges, we’re going to need to have the best and brightest IT and cyber professionals on our team,” he continued. “These are the people who will keep our networks secure, our systems running, and our data safe.”
The DOD’s annual IT and cybersecurity awards recognize the outstanding achievements of the department’s civilian and military IT and cyber professionals. This year’s winners include:
- Civilian of the Year: Dr. Bradford Tousley, a research scientist at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory
- Military Member of the Year: Capt. Kevin Gallagher, a cyber operations officer with the U.S. Air Force
- Team of the Year: The Joint Artificial Intelligence Center Cyber Team
- Cybersecurity Innovator of the Year: Dr. Michael Walker, a research scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory
These individuals and teams have made significant contributions to the DOD’s IT and cybersecurity posture, and their work is helping to keep the department’s networks and data safe from cyberattacks.
“I’m proud to recognize these outstanding individuals and teams for their hard work and dedication,” Sherman said. “Their work is essential to our national security, and we’re grateful for their service.”
The DOD’s need for skilled IT and cybersecurity professionals is growing, and the department is committed to recruiting and retaining the best and brightest talent. The department offers a variety of programs and initiatives to support its IT and cybersecurity workforce, including:
- The DOD Cyber Scholarship Program, which provides full scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in cybersecurity
- The DOD IT Workforce Development Program, which provides training and development opportunities for IT professionals
- The DOD CyberCorps, which provides scholarships and internships to students pursuing careers in cybersecurity
These programs are helping to ensure that the DOD has the skilled workforce it needs to meet the challenges of the future.
“The world is changing rapidly, and we need to be prepared for whatever challenges come our way,” Sherman said. “I’m confident that our IT and cybersecurity professionals are up to the task.”
