The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, today issued the following statement on the situation in Sudan:
“We are deeply concerned by the ongoing violence and instability in Sudan. We condemn the use of excessive force against protesters and call on all parties to exercise restraint.
“Canada supports the people of Sudan in their aspirations for a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous future. We urge all parties to engage in dialogue to find a peaceful resolution to the current crisis.
“We also call on the Sudanese authorities to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
“Canada stands ready to support the people of Sudan in their efforts to build a more democratic and inclusive society.”
