Minister Khera Statement for International Day of Persons with Disabilities
OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, today issued the following statement:
“On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we celebrate the contributions of persons with disabilities to our society. We also recommit to creating a more inclusive and accessible Canada where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
“This year’s theme, “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world”, highlights the importance of using innovative solutions to break down barriers for persons with disabilities.
“The Government of Canada is committed to working with persons with disabilities, organizations representing them, and all Canadians to:
- Make public spaces, programs and services more accessible;
- Increase the representation of persons with disabilities in leadership positions;
- Champion employment opportunities for persons with disabilities; and
- Reduce poverty among persons with disabilities.
“We are making progress. For example, we have:
- Introduced the Disability Inclusion Action Plan to guide our work over the next five years;
- Launched the Enabling Accessibility Fund to make communities and workplaces more accessible;
- Increased funding for the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities; and
- Implemented the Accessible Canada Act to create a barrier-free Canada by 2040.
“While we have made progress, there is still much more to do. We must continue to work together to create a truly inclusive society where persons with disabilities are valued and respected as full and equal members.”
