Italy and India: Urso, “strategic partnership in Blue and Space Economy”
Rome, November 30, 2024 – The Minister of Economic Development, Adolfo Urso, met today in New Delhi with the Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, Meenakshi Lekhi, to discuss the strategic partnership between Italy and India, with particular focus on the Blue and Space Economy.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the “India-Italy: Enhancing Partnership in Blue and Space Economy” seminar, organized by the Italian Embassy in New Delhi in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Minister Urso highlighted the importance of the strategic partnership between Italy and India, which is based on a shared vision of a rules-based international order and a commitment to sustainable development. He also stressed the complementarity between the two countries’ economies, which offers significant opportunities for collaboration in various sectors, including the Blue and Space Economy.
The Blue Economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and improved livelihoods. Italy has a long tradition in this field, with a strong shipbuilding industry and expertise in marine technologies. India, on the other hand, has a vast coastline and a growing maritime sector. The two countries can therefore collaborate in areas such as shipbuilding, port development, and marine research.
The Space Economy refers to the use of space technologies for commercial purposes, such as satellite communications, Earth observation, and navigation. Italy has a well-established space industry, with companies like Leonardo and Thales Alenia Space. India, too, has a strong space program and is actively developing its own space technologies. The two countries can therefore collaborate in areas such as satellite manufacturing, launch services, and space exploration.
During the meeting, Minister Urso and Minister Lekhi agreed to work together to promote cooperation between Italian and Indian companies in the Blue and Space Economy. They also agreed to explore the possibility of establishing a joint working group on these issues.
The “India-Italy: Enhancing Partnership in Blue and Space Economy” seminar was attended by representatives from government, industry, and academia from both countries. The seminar provided a platform for discussing the opportunities and challenges in the Blue and Space Economy and for exploring ways to enhance cooperation between Italy and India in these sectors.
