Today, the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, issued the following statement to mark the one-year anniversary of the launch of the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline:

“One year ago today, we launched the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline, a free and confidential resource for Canadians experiencing a mental health or suicide crisis.

“In the past year, the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline has answered over 2 million calls, chats, and texts from Canadians in distress. The helpline is staffed by trained crisis counselors who provide immediate support, assessment, and referral to appropriate resources.

“The 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline is an essential tool in our efforts to improve mental health outcomes for Canadians. It provides a safe and accessible way for people to get the help they need, when they need it most.

“I am grateful to the crisis counselors who work tirelessly to provide support to Canadians in distress. Their work is saving lives.

“I encourage all Canadians to learn about the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline and to share it with their friends and family. Help is available, and it is just a phone call, chat, or text away.

“If you are experiencing a mental health or suicide crisis, please call, chat, or text 9-8-8. You are not alone.”
