Ottawa, Ontario – The Government of Canada welcomes the outcomes of the 21st Kimberley Process (KP) plenary meeting, held in Gaborone, Botswana, from November 21 to 25, 2024.
The KP is an international certification scheme that aims to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate diamond supply chain. It brings together governments, industry, and civil society to develop and implement standards for the trade in rough diamonds.
At the plenary meeting, participants discussed a range of issues related to the KP, including the implementation of the new KP Certification Scheme, the review of the KP definition of conflict diamonds, and the development of a new KP strategic plan.
Canada played an active role in the negotiations and helped to achieve consensus on a number of important issues. These included:
- The adoption of the new KP Certification Scheme, which will come into effect on January 1, 2025. The new scheme will strengthen the KP’s ability to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate diamond supply chain.
- The agreement to review the KP definition of conflict diamonds. The current definition is based on the conflict diamonds definition developed by the United Nations in 2000. The review will consider whether the definition needs to be updated to reflect the current context.
- The development of a new KP strategic plan. The new strategic plan will set out the KP’s priorities for the next five years.
Canada is committed to the KP and believes that it plays an important role in preventing conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate diamond supply chain. Canada will continue to work with its partners in the KP to strengthen the scheme and ensure that it remains effective.
