Good morning. Thank you for inviting me to speak to you today.
I am here today to provide an update on the Competition Bureau’s work in the digital economy.
As you know, the digital economy is growing rapidly and has become increasingly important to the Canadian economy. In 2023, the digital economy accounted for 10% of Canada’s GDP and employed over 1.7 million Canadians.
This growth has been driven by a number of factors, including the increasing use of smartphones and other mobile devices, the growth of social media, and the rise of cloud computing.
The digital economy has also created a number of challenges for competition authorities. These challenges include the difficulty in defining relevant markets, the rapid pace of innovation, and the global nature of many digital markets.
The Competition Bureau has been actively working to address these challenges. We have been conducting a number of investigations into digital markets, and we have developed a number of new tools and approaches to enforcement.
For example, we have developed a new Digital Enforcement Framework to help us identify and investigate potential anti-competitive conduct in the digital economy. We have also created a new Digital Innovation Branch to help us keep pace with the latest developments in digital technology.
In addition to our enforcement work, the Competition Bureau has been actively engaged in a number of policy initiatives related to the digital economy. For example, we have been working with the government to develop a new Digital Charter for Canada.
The Digital Charter will set out a number of principles to guide the development of Canada’s digital economy. These principles include:
- Openness: The digital economy should be open and accessible to all Canadians.
- Fairness: The digital economy should be fair and competitive for all businesses.
- Innovation: The digital economy should encourage innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Privacy: The digital economy should respect the privacy of Canadians.
The Competition Bureau is committed to working with the government and other stakeholders to ensure that the digital economy is open, fair, innovative, and respectful of privacy.
