OTTAWA — The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) regret to announce the death of Private James Choi, a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, who died in Europe on November 27, 2024.

Pte Choi was deployed as part of Operation REASSURANCE, Canada’s military contribution to the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia.

The circumstances surrounding Pte Choi’s death are currently under investigation.

Pte Choi joined the CAF in 2023 and was a member of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry based in Edmonton, Alberta.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Pte Choi and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” said General Wayne Eyre, Chief of the Defence Staff. “Pte Choi was a valued member of our team and his loss will be felt by all who knew him.”

The CAF is committed to providing support to the family and friends of Pte Choi. A repatriation ceremony will be held in the coming days.
