The North West Scotland Trunk Roads (Temporary Prohibitions of Traffic and Overtaking and Temporary Speed Restrictions) (No. 11) Order 2024 is a new legislation that was made on 26 November 2024. This Order will come into force on 1 December 2024 and will expire on 28 February 2025.

This Order temporarily prohibits traffic and overtaking on certain sections of the A83 trunk road in Argyll and Bute. The Order also imposes a temporary speed restriction of 30 mph on a section of the A82 trunk road in Argyll and Bute.

The purpose of this Order is to facilitate essential road maintenance and improvement works on the affected sections of road.

The prohibitions and restrictions will be in force at the following times and locations:

  • A82 trunk road

  • From a point 800 metres or thereby west of the Highland Boundary Fault to a point 100 metres or thereby east of the Highland Boundary Fault for a distance of 1900 metres or thereby.

  • The temporary speed restriction will be in force from 08:00 hours on 1 December 2024 until 18:00 hours on 28 February 2025.

  • A83 trunk road

  • From a point 100 metres or thereby north of the Rest and Be Thankful car park to a point 1000 metres or thereby north of the Rest and Be Thankful car park for a distance of 900 metres or thereby.

  • From a point 1000 metres or thereby north of the Rest and Be Thankful car park to a point 340 metres or thereby south of the A83/A819 junction for a distance of 650 metres or thereby.

  • The temporary prohibitions will be in force from 08:00 hours on 1 December 2024 until 18:00 hours on 28 February 2025.

During the periods of closure, alternative routes will be available via the A83 Rest and Be Thankful bypass.

Access for emergency vehicles and pedestrians will be maintained at all times.

The Order includes a number of exceptions to the prohibitions and restrictions. These exceptions include:

  • Vehicles being used for police, fire and rescue service purposes.
  • Vehicles being used for the purposes of the road works.
  • Vehicles being used for the purposes of emergency repairs.
  • Vehicles being used for authorised access to properties.
  • Vehicles being used for public transport services.
  • Vehicles being used for the conveyance of goods or materials for the purposes of the road works.

The Order does not apply to cyclists.

Failure to comply with the Order is an offence and may result in a fine of up to £1000.
