MEPs Back Bulgarian Candidate for Court of Auditors
Strasbourg, 28 November 2024 – In a vote on Wednesday, the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) backed the nomination of Bulgarian candidate, Mr. Ivan Ivanov, as a member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA).
Mr. Ivanov’s candidacy was presented to the committee by Ms. Monika Hohlmeier, Chair of the ECA, who highlighted his extensive experience in public finance and audit. Mr. Ivanov is currently the President of the Bulgarian National Audit Office.
During the hearing, Mr. Ivanov outlined his vision for the ECA, emphasizing the importance of independence, accountability, and transparency. He also pledged to contribute to the ECA’s work in promoting sound financial management in the European Union.
The CONT committee’s positive opinion on Mr. Ivanov’s candidacy is a significant step in the appointment process. The full Parliament will now vote on the nomination, which is expected to take place in early December.
If approved by Parliament, Mr. Ivanov will replace Ms. Iliana Ivanova, whose term as a member of the ECA ends on 31 December 2024.
The ECA is the EU’s external auditor, responsible for auditing the EU’s finances and ensuring that they are managed efficiently and effectively. The Court consists of 27 members, one from each EU member state.
