GENEVA (26 November 2024) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Saturday called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon in the wake of deadly clashes between supporters of rival political factions.
The clashes, which erupted on Thursday, have reportedly resulted in at least seven deaths and over 30 injuries.
“I am deeply concerned by the outbreak of violence in Lebanon and urge all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from further escalation,” Türk said. “It is imperative that all sides work together to find a peaceful resolution to the current crisis.”
The High Commissioner reminded all parties of their obligations under international human rights law to protect civilians and respect the rights of protesters. He also called on the Lebanese authorities to investigate the violence thoroughly and to hold those responsible accountable.
“The people of Lebanon have suffered greatly in recent years, and it is essential that they be allowed to exercise their right to peaceful protest without fear of violence or reprisal,” Türk said. “I urge all parties to work together to restore calm and stability to the country.”
