Government of Canada supports federal law enforcement agencies in addressing gun and gang violence
November 26, 2024
The Government of Canada is providing over $100 million to federal law enforcement agencies to support their efforts to combat gun and gang violence. This funding will help agencies to enhance their response to these serious threats and keep communities safe.
The funding will be allocated as follows:
- $50 million to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to support the National Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force (NIGGET). NIGGET is a joint RCMP and local police project that focuses on combating gun and gang-related crime.
- $30 million to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to enhance border security and prevent the smuggling of firearms into Canada.
- $20 million to the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to enhance security at airports and prevent the transportation of firearms by air.
The government is also providing $5 million to the Department of Justice to support research on gun and gang violence, and to develop evidence-based policies to address these issues.
“Gun and gang violence are serious threats to our communities,” said the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Marco Mendicino. “This funding will help our federal law enforcement agencies to combat these crimes and keep Canadians safe.”
The government is committed to working with law enforcement and community partners to address gun and gang violence. This funding will provide agencies with the resources they need to continue their important work in keeping our communities safe.
