Ottawa, Ontario, November 26, 2024 – The Government of Canada is investing $11.6 million in 14 active and rural transit projects in Ontario. This investment will help communities improve their public transit systems, making it easier for people to get around and connect with essential services.

“Our government is committed to investing in public transit to make it easier for people to get around and connect with essential services,” said the Honourable Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transport. “These projects will help communities in Ontario improve their public transit systems, reduce emissions, and create jobs.”

The funding for these projects comes from the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream (PTIS) of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). The PTIS provides funding for public transit projects that improve accessibility, efficiency, and connectivity.

The 14 projects that will receive funding include:

  • City of Belleville: $2.5 million for the purchase of 10 new electric buses
  • City of Brampton: $2.2 million for the construction of a new bus rapid transit (BRT) station on Queen Street
  • City of Hamilton: $1.8 million for the purchase of 10 new hybrid buses
  • City of Kingston: $1.5 million for the construction of a new park-and-ride lot at the Kingston Centre transfer point
  • City of London: $1 million for the purchase of five new electric buses
  • City of Mississauga: $1 million for the construction of a new BRT station on Hurontario Street
  • City of Ottawa: $600,000 for the purchase of two new electric buses
  • City of St. Catharines: $500,000 for the construction of a new bus rapid transit station on Geneva Street
  • City of Sudbury: $400,000 for the purchase of two new hybrid buses
  • City of Thunder Bay: $400,000 for the construction of a new park-and-ride lot at the Thunder Bay Transit terminal
  • Town of Ajax: $300,000 for the purchase of one new electric bus
  • Town of Newmarket: $200,000 for the construction of a new bus shelter on Yonge Street
  • Town of Richmond Hill: $200,000 for the purchase of one new electric bus
  • Township of Scugog: $100,000 for the construction of a new bus shelter on Highway 7A

These projects are expected to create over 100 jobs and will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 1,000 tonnes per year.

“Investments in public transit are essential for building more sustainable and inclusive communities,” said the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “These projects will help reduce emissions, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for residents in Ontario.”

The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program is a $33-billion federal investment in public infrastructure across Canada. The program is designed to support projects that improve transportation, water, wastewater, and energy infrastructure across the country.
