No end in sight to ‘horror’ in Gaza, UN official tells Security Council

United Nations – The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains dire, with no end in sight to the “horror” faced by its two million people, a senior UN official told the Security Council on Thursday.
“The situation in Gaza remains one of protracted humanitarian crisis, with chronic poverty, high unemployment, and a limited and fragile economy,” said Lynn Hastings, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
She said that the recent escalation of violence in Gaza had caused further suffering, with at least 49 Palestinians killed, including 17 children, and more than 360 injured.
“The use of excessive force by Israeli security forces against civilians, including children, is deeply concerning,” she said. “We continue to call for independent, transparent, and impartial investigations into all incidents of unlawful killings or injuries.”
Hastings said that the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza since 2007 continues to have a devastating impact on the lives of its people.
“The blockade severely restricts the movement of people and goods, and has crippled the economy,” she said. “It has also led to chronic shortages of essential items, including food, fuel, and medicine.”
She said that the UN was working with partners to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, but that much more was needed.
“We call on the international community to increase its support for the people of Gaza and to work towards a just and sustainable solution to the conflict,” she said.
The Security Council met on Thursday to discuss the situation in the Middle East, including the occupied Palestinian territories.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Council expressed its concern about the recent escalation of violence and called for an end to all violence and provocations.
The Council also called on Israel to respect international humanitarian law and to ensure the protection of civilians.
The Council also expressed its support for the work of UNRWA, the UN agency that provides humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees.
