Lebanon: UNIFIL concerned by attacks on Lebanese Armed Forces
November 25, 2024
Beirut, Lebanon – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has expressed concern over the recent attacks on the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in the south of the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday, UNIFIL said it was “deeply concerned by the increasing number of attacks” on LAF positions in the area of operations.
“These attacks,” the statement said, “are a clear violation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and threaten the stability of the region.”
UNIFIL said it was working closely with the LAF to investigate the attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The statement comes after a number of attacks on LAF positions in the south of Lebanon in recent weeks. On November 18, a roadside bomb exploded near an LAF patrol in the town of Kfar Kila. Two soldiers were injured in the attack.
On November 20, another roadside bomb exploded near an LAF patrol in the town of Marjayoun. No one was injured in the attack.
UNIFIL said it was “determined to continue to support the LAF in its efforts to maintain security and stability in the south of Lebanon.”
The attacks on the LAF come at a time of heightened tensions in the region. Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have been rising in recent months, following a number of incidents on the border between the two countries.
In August, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Lebanon in response to rocket fire from Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group. The airstrikes were the first major cross-border violence between the two countries since the 2006 war.
UNIFIL has been deployed in Lebanon since 1978 to help maintain peace and stability in the south of the country. The force is currently composed of more than 10,000 troops from 44 countries.
