Statement by ministers Joly and Hussen on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
November 25, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario – The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, today issued the following statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women:
“Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we stand in solidarity with survivors and advocates working to end gender-based violence in all its forms.
“Violence against women and girls is a global pandemic that affects one in three women worldwide. It is a violation of human rights and a barrier to gender equality.
“In Canada, we have made progress in recent years, but there is still much work to be done. Indigenous women, women of colour, women with disabilities, and LGBTQ2+ women continue to experience disproportionately high rates of violence.
“That is why the Government of Canada is taking action on multiple fronts to address gender-based violence. We are investing in prevention programs, supporting survivors, and working with partners to change the culture that allows violence against women to persist.
“As part of our National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, we are investing $100 million over five years to support Indigenous-led initiatives to address violence against Indigenous women and girls. We are also providing $60 million over five years to support organizations that provide services to survivors of violence, and $20 million over five years to fund research on the causes and prevention of gender-based violence.
“We are also working with our international partners to end violence against women and girls around the world. We are supporting programs that promote gender equality, empower women and girls, and prevent violence.
“Ending gender-based violence requires a whole-of-society approach. We all have a role to play in creating a world where women and girls are safe and free from violence.
“Today, we call on all Canadians to join us in taking action to end gender-based violence. We must all work together to create a more just and equitable world for all.”
