Message from the Minister of Health and the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health – International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day
OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 23, 2024 – Today, on International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, we recognize and honour the loved ones who have been left behind after a suicide.
Suicide is a tragedy that affects not only the person who dies, but also their family and friends. The survivors are often left with feelings of grief, guilt, and anger. They may also experience social isolation and stigma.
Today, we want to let all survivors know that they are not alone. There are people who care and want to help. There are resources available to support you on your journey.
Mental health is an important part of overall health. Suicide is a serious public health issue and we need to work together to prevent it. The Government of Canada is committed to taking action on suicide prevention. In Budget 2023, we invested $125 million in a new National Suicide Prevention Strategy.
This strategy will focus on a number of key areas, including:
- Education and awareness
- Research and evaluation
- Crisis support
- Postvention support for survivors
We know that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to suicide prevention. That’s why we are taking a comprehensive approach that will focus on the unique needs of different groups of people, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people; LGBTQ2+ people; and young people.
We also know that the best way to prevent suicide is to reach out to those who are struggling and offer them help. If you are concerned about someone, please reach out to them. Let them know that you are there for them and that there is hope.
If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide, please reach out for help. There are people who care about you and want to help you get through this tough time.
