Governor Hochul Announces Crackdown on Impaired and Reckless Driving Through Thanksgiving Weekend

New York, NY – Governor Kathy Hochul today announced a statewide crackdown on impaired and reckless driving during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The initiative, which will run from Wednesday, November 23, through Sunday, November 27, is aimed at keeping New York’s roads safe and preventing tragedies.

“Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to come together and celebrate,” Governor Hochul said. “We want everyone to enjoy the holiday safely, and that means cracking down on impaired and reckless driving. We will have extra troopers on the roads to enforce the law and keep our communities safe.”

During the crackdown, the New York State Police will be conducting sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols throughout the state. Troopers will be looking for drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs, as well as those who are speeding, tailgating, or driving recklessly.

“Impaired and reckless driving are serious crimes that endanger the lives of everyone on the road,” said New York State Police Superintendent Kevin P. Bruen. “We will have zero tolerance for these behaviors during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. If you are caught driving while impaired or recklessly, you will be arrested.”

In addition to the state police, local law enforcement agencies will also be participating in the crackdown. Motorists can expect to see increased patrols on local roads and highways.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) is also reminding drivers to be aware of the dangers of impaired driving. The GTSC’s “STOP-DWI” campaign encourages drivers to never drink and drive and to always designate a sober driver.

“Thanksgiving is a time for celebration, but it’s also a time when people are more likely to be impaired behind the wheel,” said GTSC Chair and DMV Commissioner Mark J. F. Schroeder. “We urge everyone to make responsible choices and to never drive while impaired.”

The GTSC also offers the following tips for safe driving during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend:

  • Plan ahead and designate a sober driver.
  • If you are impaired, call a taxi, ride-sharing service, or friend for a ride.
  • Never get behind the wheel if you have been drinking or using drugs.
  • Obey the speed limit and other traffic laws.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions while driving.
  • Buckle up every time you get in a vehicle.
