Minister MacAulay announces funding for innovations in sustainable agricultural technology
OTTAWA, Ontario – The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, today announced an investment of up to $12 million over five years through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership to support the implementation of a new pan-Canadian initiative known as the Sustainable Agriculture Challenge Program.
This program will provide funding to Canadian businesses, research institutions and not-for-profit organizations to develop and implement innovative solutions that reduce the environmental footprint of agriculture while enhancing productivity and profitability.
“Our government is committed to supporting the growth and prosperity of the agriculture sector while protecting our environment,” said Minister MacAulay. “This investment will help to create new opportunities for Canadian businesses and researchers to develop innovative solutions that will make our agriculture sector more sustainable and competitive.”
The Sustainable Agriculture Challenge Program will focus on supporting projects that: * Reduce greenhouse gas emissions * Improve water quality and conservation * Enhance soil health * Promote biodiversity * Foster collaboration between the agriculture sector and other industries
Projects funded under this program will be required to demonstrate a clear path to commercialization and have the potential to create economic benefits for the agriculture sector.
“This is an exciting opportunity for Canadian businesses and researchers to make a real difference in the sustainability of our agriculture sector,” said Dr. Mary-Jane Wuersten, Vice-President Research at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. “We look forward to seeing the innovative solutions that emerge from this program.”
The Sustainable Agriculture Challenge Program is one of several initiatives that the Government of Canada is investing in to support the sustainable growth of the agriculture sector. Other initiatives include the $150 million Agricultural Clean Technology Program and the $20 million Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program.
The Government of Canada is committed to working with the agriculture sector to build a more sustainable and prosperous future for all Canadians.
