Renewable Energy Shines at Toyota Alabama

  • November 18, 2024

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (November 18, 2024) – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama (TMMAL) today announced a significant expansion of its on-site renewable energy capabilities, with the addition of a new 80-megawatt solar farm. The solar farm, located on a 500-acre site adjacent to the plant, will generate enough electricity to power approximately 15,000 homes and offset more than 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The solar farm is part of Toyota’s broader commitment to sustainability and its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Toyota has been a leader in the development of hybrid and electric vehicles, and the company has also invested heavily in renewable energy projects around the world.

“This solar farm is a major step forward in our efforts to reduce our environmental impact and create a more sustainable future,” said David Fernandes, president of TMMAL. “We are proud to be a leader in the automotive industry in the use of renewable energy.”

The solar farm will be built by Origis Energy, a leading developer of renewable energy projects. Construction is expected to begin in early 2025 and be completed by the end of the year.

“We are excited to partner with Toyota on this important project,” said Johan Vanhee, CEO of Origis Energy. “Toyota’s commitment to sustainability is an inspiration to us, and we are proud to be part of their efforts to create a cleaner future.”

The solar farm is the latest in a series of sustainability initiatives at TMMAL. The plant has already installed a number of energy-efficient technologies, and it has also planted more than 1 million trees on its property.

“We are committed to being a good neighbor and a responsible corporate citizen,” said Fernandes. “This solar farm is a symbol of our commitment to the environment and to the people of Alabama.”
