Statement by Minister Khera on Gurpurab, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Birthday
November 15, 2024 – Ottawa, ON – Canadian Heritage
The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, issued the following statement today on the occasion of Gurpurab, the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith:
“Today, Sikhs in Canada and around the world celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught us the importance of equality, compassion, and service to others. The message of “Vand Chakko” or sharing with others is central to Sikh teachings.
This year, as we reflect on Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings, let us recommit to building a more just and equitable society, both here in Canada and around the world.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji traveled extensively, spreading his message of love and unity. He believed that all people are equal and should be treated with respect and compassion.
His teachings have inspired generations of Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike. They remind us of the importance of living our lives with purpose and meaning, and of serving others.
On this special day, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Let us all strive to live by his example, and to make a positive difference in the world.”
