A reformed system can help ensure high food standards, says FSA chair
14 November 2024
The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has set out plans to reform the food safety system in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The FSA Board has agreed to launch a public consultation on the future of food regulation, which will explore a range of options for modernising the current system.
This includes proposals to:
- Create a new, independent Food Standards Commission to oversee the FSA and set food standards
- Give the FSA new powers to regulate food businesses and take action against those who break the rules
- Improve the way the FSA communicates with consumers and businesses about food safety
The current food safety system is based on EU law, which will no longer apply to the UK following Brexit. The FSA is therefore working to develop a new system that is fit for the 21st century and meets the needs of UK consumers and businesses.
FSA Chair Heather Hancock said: “We have a world-class food safety system in the UK, but it is time for reform. We need a system that is fit for the future and meets the needs of UK consumers and businesses.
“Our proposals would create a new, independent Food Standards Commission to oversee the FSA and set food standards. This would give consumers more confidence in the food they eat and help to ensure that the UK remains a world leader in food safety.”
The public consultation on the future of food regulation will run until 1 March 2025. The FSA will then use the feedback from the consultation to develop a detailed plan for reform.
