Gaza: Israeli war tactics condemned as aid still blocked from reaching north

Gaza City, Palestine – Human rights groups have condemned Israel’s war tactics in the Gaza Strip, as aid organizations continue to be blocked from reaching the northern part of the territory.
Israeli forces have been engaged in a military operation in Gaza since November 11, in response to rocket fire from the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The operation has killed at least 100 Palestinians, including 27 children, and injured more than 500 others.
Israeli war tactics condemned
Human rights groups have condemned Israel’s use of excessive and indiscriminate force in the Gaza Strip. Amnesty International said that Israel’s attacks on civilian areas may amount to war crimes.
“The Israeli military’s attacks on densely populated civilian areas in Gaza have killed and injured hundreds of civilians, including children,” said Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Saleh Higazi. “These attacks may amount to war crimes and must be independently and impartially investigated.”
Human Rights Watch also condemned Israel’s use of white phosphorus shells in Gaza. White phosphorus is a highly incendiary weapon that can cause severe burns and organ failure.
“The use of white phosphorus in densely populated areas is a serious violation of international law,” said Human Rights Watch’s Middle East and North Africa Director, Sarah Leah Whitson. “Israel should immediately cease using this weapon and investigate its use in Gaza.”
Aid still blocked from reaching north
Aid organizations are still being blocked from reaching the northern part of the Gaza Strip, where the fighting has been most intense. The Israeli military has closed all crossings into the area, and aid workers are being prevented from entering.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said that it has been unable to deliver food, water, and medical supplies to the northern Gaza Strip for the past three days.
“We are deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in the northern Gaza Strip,” said UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness. “We are calling on Israel to open the crossings and allow aid workers to enter the area.”
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also called on Israel to allow aid workers to reach the northern Gaza Strip.
“The ICRC is extremely concerned about the humanitarian situation in the northern Gaza Strip,” said ICRC spokesman Eyal Hershkovitz. “We urge all parties to the conflict to allow aid workers to reach the area and provide life-saving assistance to the civilian population.”
