Statement by ministers Joly and Hussen on persistent risk of famine in Gaza

November 14, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, today issued the following statement:

“We are deeply concerned about the persistent risk of famine in the Gaza Strip.

“The situation in Gaza has been deteriorating for years, with over two million Palestinians living under a suffocating Israeli blockade that restricts access to essential goods and services. This blockade has crippled Gaza’s economy, leaving over half of the population unemployed and dependent on humanitarian aid.

“The lack of access to food, water, and electricity has created a dire humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations, over two million people in Gaza are food insecure, and over one million are at risk of starvation.

“We urge the international community to take immediate action to address this crisis. We call on Israel to immediately lift the blockade and allow for the free flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. We also call on the Palestinian authorities to do everything in their power to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

“Canada is committed to working with our partners to find a lasting solution to the crisis in Gaza. We will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza and work towards a just and lasting peace in the region.”
