Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island – Today, the Honourable Joyce Murray, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, announced an investment of over $61 million in Prince Edward Island’s small craft harbours. This investment will support vital infrastructure upgrades, repairs, and maintenance projects at 13 harbours across the province.
“Our fishing industry is a vital part of the economic and cultural fabric of Prince Edward Island,” said Minister Murray. “These investments will help ensure that our fishermen and women have access to safe, reliable, and modern harbours, supporting their livelihoods and the communities that rely on them.”
The funding will be used to:
- Repair and replace aging breakwaters and wharves
- Dredge channels to improve access for vessels
- Enhance electrical, lighting, and water systems
- Construct fuel storage facilities
- Improve boat launch areas and public access
“This investment is a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting our coastal communities,” said Robert Morrissey, Member of Parliament for Egmont. “These upgrades will create safer and more efficient harbours, benefiting not only our fishermen but also the tourism and recreation sectors that rely on them.”
The Small Craft Harbours Program invests in harbours that are managed by local harbour authorities. These authorities are responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the harbours.
“We are thrilled to receive this investment from the Government of Canada,” said Dale MacLeod, Chair of the Alberton Harbour Authority. “These upgrades will allow us to provide our fishermen and boaters with a modern and well-equipped facility.”
The investments in Prince Edward Island’s small craft harbours are part of the Government of Canada’s $3 billion Oceans Protection Plan. This plan aims to protect and restore Canada’s coastal ecosystems, while supporting sustainable economic development in coastal communities.
Additional Quotes:
“This investment is a major boost for our fishing industry,” said Derrick Buell, President of the Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association. “Safe and accessible harbours are essential for our fishermen to get their products to market.”
“These upgrades will not only benefit our fishermen but also make our harbours more attractive to tourists and boaters,” said Kelly Ellsworth, Mayor of Summerside. “This investment will help us grow our tourism and recreation sectors.”
