Champagne breaks ground on $35M Port Colborne wastewater project
PORT COLBORNE, Ont. — The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing in the development of a new wastewater treatment facility in Port Colborne, Ont.
The project will see the construction of a new sewage treatment facility to replace the existing facility, which has reached the end of its lifespan.
The new facility will use advanced treatment technology to meet or exceed provincial effluent standards and provide enhanced protection for the local environment and the Niagara River.
The federal government is contributing $17.5 million to the project through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The provincial government is providing $17.5 million, and the municipality is contributing the remaining $10 million.
Francis Scarpaleggia, Member of Parliament for Lac-Saint-Louis, on behalf of the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities; Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario; and Andrea Horwath, Mayor of Port Colborne, participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Port Colborne Wastewater Treatment Plant expansion project.
“Investments in green infrastructure like this wastewater treatment facility are vital to protecting our environment and ensuring the health and well-being of our communities,” Scarpaleggia said. “This new facility will not only meet or exceed provincial effluent standards, but also provide enhanced protection for the local environment and the Niagara River.”
“Our government is committed to investing in critical infrastructure projects that protect our environment and improve the quality of life for Ontarians,” Ford said. “This new wastewater treatment facility will ensure that Port Colborne has the infrastructure it needs to support its growing community and protect the local environment for generations to come.”
“This project is a significant investment in the future of Port Colborne,” Horwath said. “The new wastewater treatment facility will help to ensure that our community has the infrastructure it needs to grow and prosper, while also protecting our environment.”
The project is expected to be completed in 2024.
