Government of Canada and Province of Prince Edward Island fund projects under the Atlantic Fisheries Fund
November 13, 2024
The Honourable Joyce Murray, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and the Honourable Brad Trivers, Prince Edward Island Minister of Fisheries and Communities, today announced joint funding of over $1.2 million for projects under the Atlantic Fisheries Fund (AFF).
The AFF is a federal-provincial program that supports the sustainable development and growth of the Atlantic Canadian fisheries and aquaculture sector. Since its launch in 2017, the program has invested over $150 million in projects across the region.
“Our government is committed to supporting the growth and sustainability of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Atlantic Canada,” said Minister Murray. “These projects will help to create jobs, strengthen our coastal communities, and protect our valuable marine resources.”
“The Atlantic Fisheries Fund is an important investment in the future of our province’s fisheries sector,” said Minister Trivers. “These projects will help to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability in our industry.”
The projects announced today include:
- $500,000 for the Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association to purchase and install a new weigh scale system at the North Rustico Harbour. The new system will improve the accuracy and efficiency of fish landings, and will help to ensure that fishermen are getting a fair price for their catch.
- $300,000 for the Eastern Kings Fishermen’s Association to purchase and install a new ice maker at the Souris Harbour. The new ice maker will help to preserve the quality of fish landings, and will reduce the amount of spoilage.
- $200,000 for the Tignish Fishermen’s Co-operative to purchase and install a new fish processing line at their facility in Tignish. The new processing line will help to improve the efficiency and quality of fish processing, and will create new jobs in the community.
- $100,000 for the Acadian Fishermen’s Co-operative to purchase and install a new refrigeration system at their facility in Abram-Village. The new refrigeration system will help to preserve the quality of fish landings, and will reduce the amount of spoilage.
- $100,000 for the Prince Edward Island Aquaculture Alliance to conduct a feasibility study on the development of a new aquaculture park in the province. The study will assess the potential for developing a new aquaculture park in Prince Edward Island, and will identify the necessary infrastructure and resources.
The AFF is a key part of the Government of Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan, a $1.5 billion investment to protect Canada’s coasts and waterways. The plan is helping to create a sustainable future for our oceans and fisheries, and is supporting the growth of the Canadian economy.
