A landowner in Essex has been fined for allowing an illegal waste site to operate on her land.
Brenda Smith, of Little Waltham, was fined £20,000 at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 12 November 2024.
The court heard that Smith had allowed waste to be dumped on her land at The Paddocks, Little Waltham, without a permit.
The waste included construction and demolition waste, wood, metal, and plastic.
The court heard that Smith had been warned by the Environment Agency about the illegal waste site, but had failed to take any action to stop it.
Smith pleaded guilty to two offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
In addition to the fine, Smith was also ordered to pay costs of £2,250.
Speaking after the hearing, an Environment Agency spokesperson said: “We are pleased with the outcome of this case.
“Illegal waste sites can have a significant impact on the environment and can also pose a risk to human health.
“We will not hesitate to take action against those who allow illegal waste sites to operate on their land.”
