Essex landowner fined for allowing illegal waste site on her land
An Essex landowner has been fined £10,000 for allowing an illegal waste site to operate on her land.
Susannah Watson, 64, of Rectory Farm, Great Tey, admitted failing to comply with an enforcement notice issued by Braintree District Council.
The council had ordered her to clear the site, which was being used to store and process waste without a permit, but she failed to do so.
The site was discovered by council officers in 2020, who found large amounts of waste, including soil, rubble, and green waste.
The council issued an enforcement notice requiring Watson to clear the site by May 2021, but she failed to comply.
The council then took her to court, where she was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,500.
Cllr Graham Butland, cabinet member for environment and place, said: “This case shows that we will not hesitate to take action against those who flout the law and allow illegal waste sites to operate.
“Waste sites can have a significant impact on the environment and on the quality of life for local residents. They can also attract vermin and pests, and can be a fire risk.
“We urge landowners to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the council.”
Watson has since cleared the site.
