Minister Hussen Announces Funding for Indigenous Climate Projects in Latin America

November 12, 2024

Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, today announced $20 million in funding for Indigenous-led climate action projects in Latin America.

The funding is part of Canada’s commitment to supporting Indigenous peoples in addressing the climate crisis. Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected by climate change, despite contributing the least to greenhouse gas emissions.

“Indigenous peoples are essential partners in addressing climate change,” said Minister Hussen. “They have a deep understanding of their traditional lands and ecosystems, and they can play a vital role in developing and implementing solutions to the climate crisis.”

The funding will be used to support a range of projects, including:

  • Renewable energy projects that reduce reliance on fossil fuels
  • Climate adaptation measures that protect communities from the impacts of climate change
  • Capacity building programs that support Indigenous leaders and organizations in addressing climate change

“This funding will make a real difference in the lives of Indigenous communities in Latin America,” said Chief Pedro Garcia, President of the National Indigenous Organization of Latin America. “It will help us to protect our lands, our waters, and our cultures from the impacts of climate change.”

The funding announcement was made at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Minister Hussen is attending COP27 to advocate for the rights of Indigenous peoples and to promote Canada’s commitment to climate action.

Canada is a global leader in supporting Indigenous climate action. In 2021, the Government of Canada announced $1.5 billion over five years for Indigenous-led climate action projects in Canada and around the world.
