Director banned for eight years for employing illegal workers at Sheffield car wash

A company director who employed illegal workers at a Sheffield car wash has been banned from being a company director for eight years.

Asif Mahmood, of Leeds, was the director of Amsco Services Ltd, which operated a car wash on Abbeydale Road South in Sheffield.

An investigation by the Insolvency Service found that Mahmood had employed three illegal workers at the car wash. The workers were from Pakistan and had entered the UK illegally.

Mahmood paid the workers less than the minimum wage and did not deduct tax and National Insurance from their wages. He also failed to register Amsco Services Ltd with HMRC.

As a result of his actions, Mahmood has been disqualified from being a company director for eight years. He has also been ordered to pay £11,163.40 in costs.

The Insolvency Service’s investigation was supported by the Home Office and the National Crime Agency.

Commenting on the case, the Insolvency Service’s Chief Investigator, Martin Gitner, said:

“Asif Mahmood deliberately employed illegal workers to gain an unfair advantage over his competitors. He paid them less than the minimum wage and did not deduct tax and National Insurance from their wages.

“This was a clear case of exploitation and we are pleased that Mahmood has been disqualified from being a company director. This sends a clear message that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour.”

The Home Office’s Immigration Enforcement Director General, Tony Smith, said:

“Illegal working is not a victimless crime. It undercuts legitimate businesses, defrauds the taxpayer and exploits some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

“We are working closely with our partners to tackle illegal working and protect legitimate businesses and the UK taxpayer.”

The National Crime Agency’s Head of Specialist Operations, Rob Miles, said:

“This case demonstrates the close working relationship between the National Crime Agency, the Insolvency Service and the Home Office to disrupt organised crime groups and protect the UK economy.

“We will continue to work together to investigate and prosecute those who exploit illegal workers for their own financial gain.”
