Marine Management Organisation Interim Chair appointed
The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has appointed its Interim Chair, Professor Richard Barnes, to lead the organisation.
Professor Barnes is a marine biologist and oceanographer with over 40 years of experience in research, academia, and policy development. He is currently the Director of the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) and a member of the UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE).
He will take up the role of Interim Chair on 11 November 2024, following the departure of the current Chair, Ian Gambles.
Professor Barnes said: “I am honored to have been appointed as the Interim Chair of the Marine Management Organisation. I look forward to working with the MMO team to continue its vital work in managing our marine environment.”
“The MMO has a key role to play in the sustainable development of our seas and coasts, and I am keen to ensure that we continue to build on the progress that has been made in recent years.”
The MMO is the government agency responsible for managing England’s marine area. It works to ensure that the seas are used sustainably, while protecting the marine environment and its wildlife.
The MMO’s Interim Chair will lead the organization for a period of up to six months, while a permanent Chair is recruited.
Professor Barnes is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a member of the European Marine Board. He has previously served as President of the Society for Experimental Biology and Vice-President of the International Society for Reef Studies.
He has been awarded the Zoological Society of London’s Scientific Medal and the International Society for Reef Studies’ Eugene P. Odum Award for Excellence in Coral Reef Research.
