Deputy Prime Minister Announces 108 New Affordable Homes in Sault Ste. Marie
November 8, 2024 (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) – The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, today announced a federal investment of over $30 million to create 108 new affordable homes for seniors and low-income families in Sault Ste. Marie.
The investment is part of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)’s Rapid Housing Initiative, which is providing funding to build over 4,500 new, affordable homes across Canada in one year.
“Our government is committed to ensuring that everyone in Canada has a safe and affordable place to call home,” said the Deputy Prime Minister. “These 108 new homes will make a real difference in the lives of many people in Sault Ste. Marie, including seniors and families who are struggling to find a place to live.”
The homes will be built at the site of the former Royal Canadian Legion on Queen Street East. The project will include a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units. All of the units will be wheelchair accessible and designed to meet the needs of seniors and families with children.
“This is an important investment for our community,” said Mayor Christian Provenzano. “These new homes will provide much-needed affordable housing for our residents, and they will also help to revitalize our downtown core.”
The new homes are expected to be completed in 2025. They will be owned and operated by Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area.
“We are grateful for the federal government’s investment in this project,” said Dan Gray, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area. “These new homes will make a real difference in the lives of many people in our community.”
The project is one of 10 new affordable housing projects that have been announced in Sault Ste. Marie since 2021. These projects will create over 400 new affordable homes for residents of the city.
