Mr President,
The UK welcomes the Bhutanese delegation to the UPR and thanks them for their comprehensive report.
We commend Bhutan for its remarkable progress in poverty reduction and for its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals. We encourage Bhutan to continue to prioritize the eradication of extreme poverty and to focus on improving the livelihoods of the most vulnerable.
We welcome Bhutan’s efforts to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment, including the adoption of the Gender Equality Act in 2013. We encourage Bhutan to continue to address the challenges faced by women and girls, particularly in the areas of education, employment, and political participation.
We note Bhutan’s commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights and its efforts to strengthen the rule of law. We encourage Bhutan to continue to engage with the UN human rights system and to implement the recommendations of the UPR.
We welcome Bhutan’s progress in addressing the issue of child marriage and commend the adoption of the Child Marriage Prevention Act in 2022. We encourage Bhutan to continue to implement this legislation effectively and to raise awareness about the harmful consequences of child marriage.
We note Bhutan’s efforts to promote freedom of expression and media freedom. We encourage Bhutan to continue to protect these fundamental rights and to create an environment in which journalists can operate freely without fear of censorship or retribution.
We welcome Bhutan’s commitment to environmental protection and its efforts to address climate change. We encourage Bhutan to continue to play a leading role in promoting sustainable development and to collaborate with other countries to mitigate the effects of climate change.
In conclusion, the UK commends Bhutan for its progress in human rights and its commitment to sustainable development. We encourage Bhutan to continue its efforts to address the challenges it faces and to cooperate with the UN human rights system.
We wish Bhutan a successful review.
Thank you.
