UK scales up support to end violence against children during UK Minister’s first visit to Colombia

Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

The UK and Colombia have today announced more than £1 million (~COP 5,500 million) to support work to end violence against children in Colombia. This brings the total UK support for this work to over £5 million since the launch of the UK’s Violence Against Children Strategy in 2019.

The funding will support the work of local organisations working directly with children affected by violence in Colombia. This includes organisations working on prevention, such as those supporting children who are at risk of being sexually exploited or recruited into gangs. It will also support organisations that provide support to children who have experienced violence, such as access to medical support, counselling and safe spaces.

The announcement was made during the UK Minister for Development Andrew Mitchell’s first visit to Colombia. While in Colombia, the Minister met with President Gustavo Petro and Vice President Francia Marquez Mina, and discussed the UK’s support for Colombia’s peace and security agenda.

Minister Mitchell said:

“The UK is committed to working with the Colombian government and civil society to end violence against children. This funding will help us to scale up our support to local organisations that are working on the frontlines to protect children from violence. I am confident that this work will make a real difference in the lives of children in Colombia.”

Colombia has one of the highest rates of violence against children in the world. In 2022, there were an estimated 3,500 cases of sexual violence against children. The situation is particularly alarming for children in rural areas, who are more likely to be exposed to violence.

The UK’s support to end violence against children in Colombia is part of the UK’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, which include a goal to end all forms of violence against children by 2030.
