Industrial-Scale Battery Recycling Capacities
Berlin, November 7, 2024 – The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) is providing funding for the construction of two new industrial-scale battery recycling plants in Germany. The goal is to create sufficient capacity for the recycling of lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles and stationary storage systems.
The two projects, “ReLiBatt” and “LithoRec II,” will receive a total of around 300 million euros in funding. The ReLiBatt project, led by the company Accurec Recycling GmbH, aims to develop and build a recycling plant in Salzgitter with a capacity of 30,000 tons of battery material per year. The LithoRec II project, led by the company Duesenfeld GmbH & Co. KG, aims to expand its existing recycling plant in Harburg with a capacity of 15,000 tons of battery material per year.
The construction of the two plants is a major step towards establishing a comprehensive battery recycling infrastructure in Germany. It will enable the recovery of valuable raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel from used batteries, thus reducing the environmental impact and dependency on imports of these materials.
The BMWK is providing funding for these projects as part of its “National Battery Innovation Initiative,” which aims to promote the development and production of batteries in Germany. The initiative is supported by industry, academia, and research institutions.
The construction of the two new plants is expected to be completed by 2026. They will contribute significantly to the achievement of the German government’s goal of recycling 95% of all lithium-ion batteries by 2030.
