Universal Periodic Review 47: UK Statement on Bhutan
The United Kingdom welcomes Bhutan’s delegation to the UPR and thanks them for their report.
We commend Bhutan for its commitment to human rights, as evidenced by its ratification of core international human rights treaties, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
We note Bhutan’s efforts to promote gender equality, including through the Gender Equality Act 2013, and encourage further progress in this area.
We commend Bhutan’s commitment to environmental protection, as demonstrated by its target to remain carbon negative. We encourage Bhutan to continue to share its experiences and best practices in this area.
We note Bhutan’s ongoing efforts to address the issue of statelessness, and encourage the government to continue to work towards a comprehensive solution.
We encourage Bhutan to continue to strengthen its human rights framework, including by establishing a national human rights institution in line with the Paris Principles.
We recommend that Bhutan:
- Implement the recommendations made by the UN Human Rights Committee in its concluding observations on Bhutan’s initial report under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
- Ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
- Strengthen its efforts to combat human trafficking.
The United Kingdom stands ready to support Bhutan in its efforts to promote and protect human rights.
Thank you.
