Minister Vandal Launches Initiative to Support Performing Arts on the Prairies
November 7, 2024
Winnipeg, MB – The Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, and Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface–Saint Vital, today launched a new initiative to support the performing arts sector in the Prairies.
The Performing Arts on the Prairies (PAP) Initiative will provide $10 million over two years to support the creation, production, and presentation of performing arts projects across the region. This funding will help to ensure that the performing arts continue to thrive in the Prairies and contribute to the region’s social and economic well-being.
“The performing arts play a vital role in our communities,” said Minister Vandal. “They bring people together, enrich our lives, and contribute to our economy. This initiative will help to ensure that the performing arts continue to flourish on the Prairies.”
PAP will provide funding for a variety of projects, including:
- Creation and production of new performing arts works
- Touring of performing arts productions
- Capacity building for performing arts organizations
- Training and development for performing artists
The initiative will be delivered by Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan) in partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts. PrairiesCan will administer the funding and provide support to performing arts organizations, while the Canada Council for the Arts will provide artistic and peer review expertise.
“The Canada Council for the Arts is proud to partner with Prairies Economic Development Canada on this important initiative,” said Simon Brault, Director and CEO of the Canada Council for the Arts. “PAP will provide much-needed support for the performing arts sector on the Prairies and help to ensure that Canadians continue to have access to high-quality performing arts experiences.”
Applications for PAP funding will open in December 2024. More information about the initiative, including eligibility criteria and application procedures, will be available on PrairiesCan’s website in the coming weeks.
