Government of Canada Boosts Innovation to Accelerate Homebuilding in the Prairie Provinces
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – 2024-11-07 – The Government of Canada is investing $40 million to accelerate homebuilding in the Prairie provinces through a new initiative called the Prairie Homebuilding Accelerator (PHA). This investment will support the development and adoption of innovative construction technologies and practices, with a focus on reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and improving sustainability.
“We understand that access to homeownership is a critical issue facing families in the Prairie provinces,” said the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion. “Through the Prairie Homebuilding Accelerator, we are supporting innovative solutions that will make homeownership more affordable and accessible for people in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta.”
The PHA will be administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and will provide funding to eligible recipients for research, development, and demonstration projects. The focus of the funding will be on:
- Developing new construction technologies and materials: This includes exploring the use of off-site construction techniques, modular building, and advanced building materials to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
- Testing innovative design and planning solutions: This includes supporting research on ways to optimize land use, streamline permitting processes, and promote sustainable development practices.
- Enhancing skilled trades training and workforce development: This includes programs to train and certify workers in new construction technologies and techniques, ensuring that the workforce has the skills needed to build homes more efficiently and sustainably.
The PHA is part of the Government of Canada’s broader efforts to address the housing affordability crisis in Canada. By supporting innovation, the government hopes to accelerate homebuilding and make it more affordable for families in the Prairie provinces.
“This investment will help to create a more resilient and affordable housing sector in the Prairie provinces,” said Evan Siddall, President and CEO of CMHC. “By working with our partners, we can support innovative solutions that will make a real difference for people who are looking for a place to call home.”
The PHA will launch in early 2025 and will be open to applications from eligible recipients, including municipalities, non-profit organizations, research institutions, and private sector companies.
