First case of Avian influenza confirmed in poultry in England this Autumn 6 November 2024

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed the first case of avian influenza (bird flu) in poultry in England this autumn. The case was confirmed in a small backyard flock of mixed poultry in Suffolk.

The premises have been placed under movement restrictions and an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been put in place around the infected premises. This means that all poultry and captive birds in the AIPZ must be kept indoors and all poultry gatherings are banned.

The UKHSA is working closely with Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) to control the outbreak.

The Chief Veterinary Officer for England, Christine Middlemiss, said: “The confirmation of avian influenza in poultry in England is a reminder of the importance of good biosecurity on all poultry premises.

“The risk of avian influenza to human health is very low, but we are reminding the public not to touch or pick up any sick or dead birds.

“We are urging poultry keepers to be vigilant and to report any suspicion of disease immediately to their nearest APHA office.”

The main clinical signs of avian influenza in poultry include:

  • Respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, sneezing and discharge from the nose and eyes
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea
  • Depression
  • Increased thirst
  • Nervous signs, such as twitching and incoordination
  • High mortality

If you suspect that your poultry may have avian influenza, you should contact your nearest APHA office immediately.
