Charity Trustees Highly Recommend Their Role to Others, New Research Shows

6 November 2024

A new study has found that charity trustees highly recommend their role to others, with 95% saying they would do it again. The research, conducted by the Charity Commission for England and Wales, surveyed over 1,000 trustees from a range of charities.

The findings show that trustees are motivated by a desire to make a difference, with 89% saying they wanted to use their skills and experience to help others. Other reasons for becoming a trustee included a personal connection to the charity’s cause (75%), a desire to learn new skills (62%), and a belief that they could make a positive contribution (58%).

Once in their role, trustees found it to be both rewarding and challenging. The most rewarding aspects of being a trustee included making a difference to the charity (94%), working with like-minded people (87%), and learning new skills (85%). The most challenging aspects included dealing with difficult issues (69%), fundraising (62%), and managing the charity’s finances (58%).

Despite the challenges, 95% of trustees said they would do it again, and 93% would recommend the role to others. The research also found that trustees are more likely to recommend their role if they feel supported by the charity and if they have a clear understanding of their role and responsibilities.

The Charity Commission’s chief executive, Helen Stephenson, said: “This research shows that being a charity trustee is a rewarding and fulfilling role. Trustees are making a real difference to the lives of others, and they are highly motivated by a desire to help.

“We want to encourage more people to become charity trustees. It’s a great way to use your skills and experience to make a difference to your community.”
