NASA Stennis Plants Artemis Moon Tree

November 4, 2024

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. – Scientists at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, today planted a loblolly pine tree that had traveled to the Moon aboard the Artemis I mission. The tree is one of two loblolly pine saplings that were part of the Artemis I’s Orion spacecraft’s official flight kit.

The tree was planted in a ceremony at the Stennis Space Center’s Exploration Ground Systems Test Complex. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, Stennis Director Rick Gilbrech, and other NASA officials were on hand for the event.

“This tree is a symbol of our Artemis program and our commitment to returning humans to the Moon,” Nelson said. “It will serve as a reminder of the importance of science and exploration, and it will inspire future generations to reach for the stars.”

The tree was grown from seeds that were collected from a loblolly pine tree that is located at the Stennis Space Center. The seeds were then flown to the Moon aboard the Artemis I mission, which launched on Nov. 16, 2022. The seeds were returned to Earth on Dec. 11, 2022, and were planted at the Stennis Space Center.

The other loblolly pine sapling that was part of the Artemis I’s official flight kit is being planted at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

NASA’s Artemis program is a multi-decade effort to return humans to the Moon and eventually Mars. The Artemis I mission was the first uncrewed flight of the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft. The Artemis II mission, which will be the first crewed flight of the Space Launch System and Orion, is scheduled to launch in 2024. The Artemis III mission, which will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon, is scheduled to launch in 2025.

The Artemis Moon Tree is a symbol of the hope and inspiration that the Artemis program represents. It is a reminder that anything is possible if we dare to dream big and work together.
