Ministers of Veterans Affairs and National Defence Mark 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Belgium
Ottawa, Ontario – November 3, 2024 – The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence, today marked the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belgium.
“Today, we remember the brave Canadians who fought to liberate Belgium from Nazi occupation,” said Minister MacAulay. “Their sacrifice and dedication helped to restore freedom and democracy to Europe.”
“The Liberation of Belgium was a major milestone in the Second World War,” said Minister Anand. “It was a testament to the courage and determination of our Canadian troops, as well as the resilience of the Belgian people.”
On September 2, 1944, Canadian troops crossed the border into Belgium and began their advance towards Antwerp. They faced fierce resistance from the German army, but they eventually liberated the city on September 4th. The Canadians continued to fight their way through Belgium, liberating Brussels on September 5th and Antwerp on September 6th.
The Liberation of Belgium was a major victory for the Allies. It helped to open up the port of Antwerp to Allied shipping, and it paved the way for the eventual liberation of the Netherlands and Germany.
Today, we remember the Canadian soldiers who fought and died in the Liberation of Belgium. We also thank the Belgian people for their support and friendship during the war and in the years since.
The Government of Canada is committed to remembering and honouring the sacrifices of our Veterans. We will continue to work to ensure that their stories are told and that their legacy lives on.
