A Sailor’s story of resilience and triumph over adversity has earned him recognition as the “Face of Defense” for November 2024.
Growing up in a troubled neighborhood, Petty Officer 3rd Class John Smith faced numerous challenges that could have easily derailed his path. His parents struggled with addiction, and he often found himself in dangerous situations.
“I saw a lot of things that no child should ever have to see,” Smith said. “I knew I had to find a way out of that environment.”
Despite the obstacles he faced, Smith remained determined to succeed. He excelled in school and joined the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC). Through NJROTC, Smith gained a sense of purpose and direction.
“NJROTC gave me a structured environment and a positive outlet,” Smith said. “It taught me the importance of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.”
After graduating high school, Smith enlisted in the Navy as a seaman. He quickly distinguished himself as a hard worker and a natural leader. He was promoted to petty officer second class just two years after joining the service.
Smith is currently serving as a boatswain’s mate aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN 68). He is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ship’s deck equipment, including the anchor, mooring lines, and cargo handling gear.
“I love the challenges of my job,” Smith said. “I know that I’m making a difference, and that’s what motivates me to give my best every day.”
In addition to his regular duties, Smith also serves as a mentor to junior Sailors. He shares his story with them to inspire them to overcome their own challenges and achieve their goals.
“I want to show them that no matter where they come from or what they’ve been through, they can succeed in the Navy,” Smith said. “I want to be a positive role model for them.”
Smith’s perseverance and dedication have not gone unnoticed. He was recently selected as the “Face of Defense” for November 2024. This recognition highlights his extraordinary journey and his commitment to serving his country.
“I’m honored to be selected as the ‘Face of Defense,'” Smith said. “I hope my story will inspire others to never give up on their dreams, no matter how difficult things may seem.”
