Minister Petitpas Taylor Announces Supports for Canadian Veterans and Their Families

Ottawa, November 1, 2024 – Today, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, announced new supports for Veterans and their families.

“Our Veterans and their families have made enormous sacrifices for our country,” said Minister MacAulay. “We owe it to them to provide the best possible care and support.”

“We know that a lot of our Veterans and their families are not using all of the benefits and services they are entitled to, such as the Veterans Independence Program and the Family Caregiver Relief Benefit,” said Canada’s Minister of Veterans Affairs, Mona Fortier. “With this announcement today, and in conjunction with our recent changes to Veterans Education and Training Benefit (VET-B), we are broadening the opportunities for access to these supports and making it easier for Veterans and their families to get the help they need.”

The new supports include:

  • Expanding the Veterans Independence Program (VIP): VIP provides financial assistance to Veterans with permanent and severe disabilities to help them live independently in their own homes. The program is being expanded to include Veterans with less severe disabilities, and the maximum annual benefit amount is being increased from $25,000 to $32,500.
  • Enhancing the Family Caregiver Relief Benefit (FCRB): FCRB provides financial assistance to caregivers of Veterans who are providing care for a loved one with a serious illness or injury. The program is being enhanced to provide more flexible support to caregivers, and the maximum annual benefit amount is being increased from $10,000 to $15,000.
  • Streamlining access to benefits and services: The government is streamlining the process for Veterans and their families to access benefits and services. This includes creating a new online portal that will provide one-stop access to information about all of the programs and services available to Veterans.

These new supports are part of the government’s ongoing commitment to providing the best possible care and support to Veterans and their families.

“We are committed to ensuring that Veterans and their families have the support they need to live with dignity and respect,” said Minister MacAulay.
