Canada Invests in World’s First Carbon Capture Technology Demonstration in Pulp and Paper Industries
Ottawa, Ontario – November 1, 2024
The Government of Canada announced today an investment of $30 million in a first-of-its-kind project to demonstrate the world’s first carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology in the pulp and paper industry. The project will be led by Resolute Forest Products and will take place at its mill in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The project will use a proprietary carbon capture technology developed by Inventys, a leading provider of CCS solutions. The technology will capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the mill’s flue gases and then store it underground. The project is expected to capture and store up to 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to taking 25,000 cars off the road.
“This project is a significant milestone in Canada’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a low-carbon economy,” said the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. “By supporting the demonstration of this technology, we are helping to create jobs, grow our economy, and protect the environment.”
“We are proud to partner with the Government of Canada and Inventys on this ground-breaking project,” said Yves Laflamme, President and Chief Executive Officer of Resolute Forest Products. “This technology has the potential to transform the pulp and paper industry and significantly reduce our environmental footprint.”
“Our CCS technology is a proven solution for capturing and storing CO2,” said Kiran Shedden, Chief Executive Officer of Inventys. “We are excited to partner with Resolute Forest Products and the Government of Canada to demonstrate the commercial viability of this technology in the pulp and paper industry.”
The project is expected to be completed in 2026. Once operational, it will provide valuable data on the costs, performance, and environmental benefits of CCS technology in the pulp and paper industry. The project is also expected to create up to 50 new jobs during construction and operation.
Additional Information:
- The project is part of the Government of Canada’s $1.5 billion Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Program.
- The CCUS Program supports the development and demonstration of CCUS technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industrial sources.
- The pulp and paper industry is a major emitter of CO2, accounting for approximately 1% of global emissions.
- CCS is a technology that captures CO2 from industrial sources and stores it underground, where it cannot contribute to climate change.
